Artist's Description
This is a reproduction of “The Archangel Michael Hurls the Rebellious Angels into the Abyss”of about 1666. The artist was born in Naples and at the age of sixteen was apprenticed to Ribera. He moved to Florence in 1682 and executed several frescoes. Invited to Spain in 1692 and there he remained in the midst of a very successful career. Returning to Naples in 1702, he continued to paint prolifically until his death three years later at the age of seventy-one years. This particular painting he created in Naples when he was about thirty-two years old. It is an oil on canvas measuring 164 by 111.4 inches and is presently in the Kunsthistoriches Museum in Vienna.
