Description
This Italian Baroque masterpiece was painted in about 1606 by Michelangelo Caravaggio when he was about thirty-five years old. The artist was in hiding following the death of Ranuccio Tomassoni for which he was suspect. Fiv years earlier the young master had executed a work of the same scene but in the latter work the gestures of the figures have become more natural and the colors muted. The work is an middle representation of Caravaggio’s career which was cut short by his untimely death at the age of thirty-nine. This painting is currently in the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan.
