This is a reproduction of Caravaggio's "David with the Head of Goliath" of 1610. This traditional Christian religious scene is quite complicated by the details of Caravaggio's life. The model for David appears to be his young lover and the head of Goliath is definitely modeled after the artist's own head. The sword is engraved with H-AS OS, which is an abbreviation for Humilitas occidit superbiam, Humility kills Pride. Traditions also describe the painting as a gift to Cardinal Borghese who had the power to pardon Caravaggio of a murder charge and therefore allow the artist to return from his Roman exile. But he died in 1610 making his way back to Rome. The painting measures 125 by 101 centimeters and is in the Museo e Galleria Borghese, Rome.
