Description

This fabulous find was made in 2001 of a lost masterpiece by the preeminent Roman Baroque sculptor, Gian Lorenzo Bernini. It is characterized by frantic strokes of the red mantle and the luminosity of the flesh tones. There are deep shadows made stark by the light from the upper right. Though the strokes of a broad brush were applied rapidly, they were done with great precision betraying an attention to texture as befits the great sculptor. Christ is painted from above which puts the viewer in the same position as the Roman soldiers who were mocking Jesus.
