Pieter Bruegel the Elder was a master of the Flemish Renaissance who became a master of the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp when he was about twenty-three years old. In the next two years he was in Rome where he was impressed by the ruins, particularly those of the Colosseum which was then viewed as a symbol of hubris and persecurtion. Returning the Antwerp, Bruegel built a reputation from his landscapes and depictions of the life of the peasantry. He died early in 1569 aged about forty-two years. His Tower of Babel was porbably inspired by his experience of the Colosseum with the exception that the elements of the structure are built perpendicular to the imperfections of the ground. This makes the building unstable, an expression of the imperfection of the structure as well as the motivation of its builders. The original of this masterpiece is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. It measures 24 by 29.3 inches and is an oil on panel.
