Description
This wonderful Renaissance image was rediscovered and restored for its first exhibition in 2011. This painting was executed by Leonardo da Vinci for Louis XII of France between 1506 and 1513. It was recorded in the collection of Charles I of England and Scotland in 1649. It was auctioned out of the collection of the Duke of Buckingham in 1763. Sir Frederick Cook purchased the painting in 1900 and it was sold at auction in 1958. A consortium of art dealers secured the painting in 2005 when it was authenticated as Leonardo's and restored. The National Gallery of London, England exhibited the paiting in 2011 and 2012.
Leonardo was born on April 15, 1452, the natural son of a notary, in Vinci, a village not far from Florence. He studied under Verrocchio in Florence and worked for Ludovico il Moro of Milan and later in Rome, Bologna and Venice. His last years were spent in the service of Francis I of France where he died at Clos Luce on May 2, 1519. Though known primarily as a painter in his day, the contributions of Leonardo to all manner of the arts and science are legion and among many he is the personification of the true "Renaissance Man".
