Artist's Description

This is a reproduction of “Christ in Gethsemane” of 1890 by Heinrich Hofmann. This iconic painting is of a familiar scene in the history of Christian art. Hofmann’s rendition is quite dramatic, showing the concentration of Jesus mirrored in the intense narrowing of light on the face of Christ. The death of his mother turned his attention to religious subjects and this was accentuated by his trip to Italy in 1854. He received many honors but retired from public life after the death of his wife in 1890. He died in 1911. This masterpiece is an oil on canvas and measures 102.2 by 113.7 centimeters. It is in Riverside Church in New York City.
